Sustainability

Naturally Sustainable

Paper has been a part of our lives for thousands of years. Its practicality has made it one of the most versatile and widely used materials available today.

It’s hard to imagine life without paper. We use it every day – in food packaging, stationery, books, newspapers, transport tickets, and much more.

More recently, the fact that paper is made from a natural and renewable resource and is completely recyclable, has become important to consumers all over the world.

The wood fibre used to make premium Reflex is sourced from sustainably managed plantations and forestry operations in Victoria. There is no old growth timber used in Reflex or any other products made by Australian Paper.

Community

Australian Paper, the manufacturer of Reflex, has been an integral part of the LaTrobe Valley in Victoria for generations. Today it is the major employer in both regions with over 1,300 employees. Manufacturing is essential for a healthy economy and Australian Paper’s operations create significant value which benefits all Australians.

The Reflex brand of office papers is proudly Australian Made at our Maryvale Mill located in Victoria’s LaTrobe Valley.

The Maryvale Paper Mill is one of Australia’s largest integrated pulp and paper making operations and dates back to 1937 when it was first established. A cycle of continuous capital investment since that time has ensured that it remains a state of the art integrated paper making facility.
Australian Paper also employs apprentices from regional areas to learn new skills and gain professional qualifications, supports Gippsland’s KIDS Foundation and sponsors Doxa Youth Foundation cadets, who come from disadvantaged backgrounds among others.

Economic

Australian Paper is Australia’s only local fine paper manufacturer and has a considerable, positive economic impact on the Australian economy and in the regional communities in which it operates. In 2011 Australian Paper contributed more than $750 million to the Australian economy.

Maryvale Mill is the single largest private employer in the Gippsland region with almost 900 employees. Furthermore, 95% of materials procurement required for operations and product manufacture is spent on Australian suppliers.
For the people of the Latrobe Valley, local jobs keep their community strong.

Environment

As the manufacturer of Reflex, Australian Paper is committed to achieving sustainable economic growth that is of benefit to present and future generations of employees, shareholders and customers, without threatening the resources or biological systems of the world in which we operate.

Australian Paper’s objective is to utilise world’s best practice to mitigate the environmental impact of our activities. This is demonstrated by:

  • Chain of Custody certification for fibre supply
  • Certification to environmental management standard ISO14001 and quality standard ISO9001
  • Participation in the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Forest and Trade Network since 2008
  • The $600million upgrade of Maryvale Mill in 2008 saw improvements including air emission reductions and energy and water efficiencies
  • Sourcing approximately 60,000 tonnes of waste paper each year for the production of recycled content products
  • Launching and increasing production of Carbon Neutral paper products to around 8,300tonnes in 2010
  • Responsible waste management
  • Construction of composting facilities reducing waste to landfill
